How to Protect Your Privacy Online

Practical tips and strategies for safeguarding your digital privacy in an increasingly connected world.

Why Online Privacy Matters

Every day, we share personal information online — messages, photos, location data, browsing habits. Much of this data is collected, stored, and sometimes sold without our explicit consent. Protecting your privacy isn't about having something to hide; it's about maintaining control over your own information.

Practical Privacy Tips

1. Use End-to-End Encrypted Communication

Not all messaging apps are created equal. Choose apps that offer end-to-end encryption (E2EE) by default. With E2EE, only you and the intended recipient can read your messages — not the service provider, not hackers, not government agencies.

LockNKey takes this further by using key-based access, so your conversations aren't even tied to your identity.

2. Minimize Your Digital Footprint

Every app you install, every website you visit, and every account you create adds to your digital footprint. Reduce this by:

  • Using privacy-focused browsers (Firefox, Brave)
  • Installing ad blockers and privacy extensions
  • Being selective about which apps you install
  • Using temporary or disposable email addresses for sign-ups

3. Review App Permissions

Many apps request access to data they don't need. Before granting permissions, ask:

  • Does this app need my location?
  • Does it need access to my contacts?
  • Does it need my camera or microphone?

If the answer is no, deny the permission. LockNKey, for example, only requests access to your camera when you choose to attach an image to a vault.

4. Use Strong, Unique Passwords

Weak passwords are the leading cause of account breaches. Use:

  • At least 12 characters
  • A mix of letters, numbers, and symbols
  • Different passwords for different accounts
  • A password manager to keep track

5. Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security. Even if someone steals your password, they can't access your account without the second factor.

6. Be Cautious with Public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi networks are often unsecured. Avoid:

  • Logging into sensitive accounts on public Wi-Fi
  • Accessing banking or financial information
  • Sharing personal data over open networks

If you must use public Wi-Fi, use a VPN to encrypt your connection.

7. Read Privacy Policies

It's tedious, but important. Privacy policies tell you:

  • What data is collected
  • How it's used
  • Who it's shared with
  • How long it's retained

At LockNKey, our privacy policy is straightforward: we collect minimal data and can't read your encrypted messages.

The Bigger Picture

Online privacy isn't just about individual actions — it's about demanding better practices from the services we use. Choose platforms that:

  • Are transparent about data collection
  • Offer strong encryption by default
  • Don't sell your data to advertisers
  • Give you control over your information

Your privacy is worth protecting. Start with these steps today.
